The American Chestnut (Castanea dentata) is a large deciduous tree that was once dominant in the forests of eastern North America. Known for its fast growth and straight trunk, it can grow up to 100 feet tall. The tree produces large, sweet, edible nuts encased in spiny burrs. Its leaves are long, narrow, and serrated. Trees arrive 12"-24" at purchase.
Care Instructions:
- Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5 to 6.5). It thrives in deep, fertile soils but can tolerate a variety of conditions.
- Sunlight: Full sun is ideal for optimal growth. Ensure at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
- Watering: The American Chestnut requires regular watering, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogged soil. Deep watering encourages strong root development.
- Fertilization: A slow-release, balanced fertilizer can be applied in spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can harm the tree.
- Pruning: Prune to remove dead or diseased branches. Avoid heavy pruning in early spring to prevent potential damage.
- Protection: Protect young chestnut trees from chestnut blight by planting resistant varieties or grafting them onto resistant rootstocks.
Given the threat of chestnut blight, it is important to plant in suitable environments to support growth.
