American Chestnut Hybrid
The American Chestnut Hybrid (Castanea dentata hybrid) is a large, fast-growing deciduous tree developed to restore the iconic American chestnut to eastern North American forests. It shares the classic upright form and straight trunk of the native species and can eventually reach 80–100 feet tall. The tree produces sweet, edible nuts enclosed in spiny burrs and features long, narrow, serrated leaves. These hybrids are bred for improved resistance to chestnut blight while maintaining the characteristics of the original American chestnut. Trees arrive 8"–16" at purchase.
Care Instructions:
Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5 to 6.5). It performs best in deep, fertile soils but can tolerate a range of site conditions.
Sunlight: Full sun is ideal for optimal growth, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Watering: Requires regular watering during establishment and dry periods. Avoid waterlogged soils; deep, infrequent watering supports strong root development.
Fertilization: Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in spring if needed. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can stress young trees.
Pruning: Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches. Minimal pruning is recommended, especially in early spring.
Protection: American chestnut hybrids are bred for increased resistance to chestnut blight, making them more suitable for long-term planting. Planting in appropriate sites and maintaining tree health further improves survival and growth.
These hybrids play an important role in forest restoration efforts while also providing wildlife value and edible nuts for future generations.
