Old Fashion Lilac - Light Lavender (Syringa vulgaris) is a cultivar of the common lilac known for its fragrant, light lavender to pale purple flowers. This deciduous shrub typically grows 5 to 10 feet tall and wide. It has dark green, oval-shaped leaves and produces clusters of small flowers that bloom in spring, with a sweet, floral fragrance. Lilacs are widely appreciated in gardens for their beautiful flowers and pleasant scent, making them a popular choice for ornamental landscapes. Comes 8"-16" at purchase.
Care Instructions:
- Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly alkaline to neutral soil. It thrives in loamy, fertile soil but can tolerate a range of soil types, as long as it is not overly wet.
- Sunlight: Best grown in full sun to ensure vigorous blooming. Lilacs need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day to produce the most abundant flowers.
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering. Lilacs prefer moderate moisture, so allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.
- Fertilization: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and blooming. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they can promote excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
- Pruning: Prune immediately after the flowers have faded to remove spent blooms and shape the shrub. This encourages more vigorous growth and better flowering the following season. Cut back old wood and thin out crowded branches to improve air circulation.
- Pest/Disease Control: Lilacs are generally pest-resistant but may occasionally experience issues with aphids, powdery mildew, or leaf spot. Use organic treatments if necessary to control pests and diseases.
Lilac Light Lavender is a low-maintenance, fragrant shrub that thrives with minimal care, making it ideal for gardeners who want beautiful, aromatic blooms in spring.
