The Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica), also known as tupelo, is a hardy deciduous tree valued for its glossy green foliage and outstanding fall color. It develops a strong central trunk and a pyramidal shape, eventually reaching 30–50 feet tall in landscapes. In fall, the leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and purple. Small dark blue fruits are produced on female trees and provide an important food source for birds and wildlife. Black gum grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It is tolerant of a range of conditions once established and makes an excellent choice for native plantings and ornamental landscapes. 12"-18" at pickup.
